[Tutorial] How to change a fuel filter on a 1970 Cutlass
Why would you like to flag this post?
Please let us know why you would want to flag the post [Tutorial] How to change a fuel filter on a 1970 Cutlass:This tutorial will go over why you may need to change your fuel filter and also the steps on how to do it. This was done on a 1970 Cutlass SX with a 455.
Why you may need to change it: I was driving home from work one afternoon when my car kept running out of gas in the higher RPMs. I know I wasn't out of gas because I but 10 gallons in the tank just 30 miles beforehand. I ended up having to get a tow truck home (thank you AAA).
With the help of the OldsmobileCENTRAL facebook fans, I changed my fuel filter and got my car running again.
What you need
1" Wrench
9/16" Wrench
New Fuel Filter ($2.99 at Advance Auto Parts)
Possible WD40
Fire Extinguisher (You are dealing with gas, be safe)
Estimated Time
If you have all supplies and not to much of an issue getting the fuel filter compartment opened, apx 15 minutes.
Step 1: Finding the Fuel Filter
Take off the filter on the top of your carburetor to expose the area. The yellow error box area is where your fuel filter is.![]()
Step 2: Unscrewing the Fuel Filter Bolts
This step will be the most difficult depending on how tight your bolts on screwed in. Mine were pretty rough and I probably forced my wrench a little more then I should have. You need to hold the 1" wrench on the top bolt while using the 9/16" wrench and "gently" turning the bolt on the fuel line to counter clockwise. Be careful because the bolt is aluminum and will distort easily. DO NOT USE TO MUCH FORCE! Use WD40 to maybe help.
Step 3: Replace the Fuel Filter
Once you unscrew the fuel line bolt, you should be able to also unscrew the fuel filter end bolt too. Afterwards, you should be able to disconnect everything. Watch out because it is spring loaded and the old fuel filter may just fall out. You can't really tell if the fuel filter is bad or not from looking at it, but since they are so cheap, you might as well replace it anyway. Below is a picture of my old one. Simply place your new filter in here.
Step 4: Putting it all Back Together
Follow the previous steps backwards. Just put everything back together and be sure not to over tighten the bolts. Leave the top carb filter off though.
Step 5: Starting your Car
Pour a little bit of gas in your carb before trying to start your car. Once you do that, go ahead and give it a shot. Be sure to check and make sure there are no leaks when your car starts again! My car started right up and stayed on. It was beautiful.
Of course if you have any questions, please just comment here and I would be more then happy to help.
