Where did the "W" come from?

I was talking with another Oldsmobile friend about different W cars. Then we both realized we didn't really know where the W came from? Does it stand for Dr. Watson? Also, where did the come up with the numbers. W30 W31 W32 W45 (Rallye 350 right?)

And W39 seat belt. Which I mention to show that it is not just performance options. Olds simply needed to use more option codes and dipped into the available Ws. Most of the performance option simply filled in from there. No magic.
