How to change the steering wheel of your Oldsmobile
Why would you like to flag this post?
Please let us know why you would want to flag the post How to change the steering wheel of your Oldsmobile:The interior of my 1970 Cutlass SX is awful. It's definitely the part of my car that needs more work. I'm planning on turning everything black. So in the pictures, please disregard the rest of the car. But recently I came across a pretty good deal on a 4 spoke steering (without the hub cap). Here are instructions on how to change a steering wheel on a 1970 Cutlass.
NOTE
I unplugged my battery before starting this project (the second time around). The first time when I was just installing the puller, it connected a circuit when the metal touched and my horn went off which was awesome. It was the first time I've heard my Cutlass's horn work! Unfortunately, it also started electrocuting me, which was not awesome. And my horn never turned on again, might have blown a fuse. So to be safe, I would unplug the car battery.
Materials Needed
1) New Steering wheel and hub
2) Socket set
3) Steering Wheel puller kit
4) Wrench
Step 1) Pull off cover of old steering wheel
This really just takes a good hard pull, it should just come right off. It should look something like below.![]()
Step 2) Take off the main bolt
Use the wrench to unscrew the bolt around the main steering column bolt. It is right in the middle. The below picture shows it with the bolt taken off.![]()
Step 3) Start screwing in the steering wheel puller bolts
Your steering wheel puller should have come with various size bolts. Find the correct size and use the socket set to screw it in. Be sure to fit the middle metal piece in before screwing in the second bolt. Also, make sure to not screw in the bolt to much. You should feel when there is to much tension and the bolt reached the actual steering column.
Below is what it should look like with both bolts and then middle, horizontal metal piece installed. ![]()
Step 4) Screw in the middle bolt
Hold the spacer or end piece that should have come in your kit above the steering column bolt. The start screwing in the major bolt in the center hole. This will eventually pull the steering wheel towards you. You should almost hear a slight pop when the wheel disconnects. After this, you should be able to just pull of the old steering wheel. ![]()

Step 5) Add new steering wheel
You may have to adjust your sport steer wheel's hub to make it appear straight when your car is straight. That is easy, just unscrew the hub and put it back on when it aligns correctly. Then put on the main steering column bolt. At this point I was done. I do not have the horn cap. I still think its a huge improve! If you have any questions, just comment.
If you want to help me finish the rest of the interior, let me know!
